Innovative digital workflow acts as co-pilot for operators

A leading rubber manufacturer uses TilliT to improve human efficiency on the factory floor and achieve sustainability objectives by going paperless.

Client

Derby Rubber is one of the world leaders in designing and manufacturing rubber and ballast regulator broom elements, used in refreshing or laying all-new ballast bed rail tracks worldwide.

Headquartered in Adelaide, with offices and warehousing in Sydney and the Netherlands, Derby Rubber’s technologies include rubber compounding, mixing, extrusion, bonding to metal, and to fabric, molding, and special hand fabrications.

Challenge

Using a combination of new and legacy equipment – common in any modern manufacturing operation – Derby Rubber wanted a solution to incorporate both their existing assets and new technologies while remaining agile for potential new innovations.

Derby Rubber prides itself on utilizing imagination, ingenuity, innovation, and perseverance to deliver great outcomes for its clients – and was seeking a digital manufacturing operations solution to enhance operational efficiency and improve sustainability by removing paper from the factory floor.

“At Derby Rubber we're constantly having to innovate our materials, and our products and our processes in order to continue to deliver value to our customers and to stay ahead of the competition.”

Michael Clayton, CEO of Derby Rubber.

After hearing about a new digital manufacturing solution that was a part of SAGE Group, Derby Rubber soon learned that TillIT could achieve all these objectives and more.

Solution

After a short consultation period with the TilliT team, Derby Rubber implemented the digital manufacturing solution across all lines in their Adelaide-based factory. At the front end, TilliT can be accessed through tablet, a mobile device or desktop, enabling operators to easily manage a digital workflow prescribing activities that operators need to carry out on the shop floor– tailor-made to Derby Rubber’s operation.

“We can see exactly where jobs are out on the shop floor live,” said Michael Clayton, CEO of Derby Rubber. “We're seeing what jobs are being run on particular machines centers, where we capture the tolerance checks, quality checks, and the quantity of products being manufactured on the shop floor.”

In the back office, TilliT enables management to make smarter decisions by visualizing critical business insights based on real-time information across the operation. Inbuilt artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) ensures efficiency improves over time as more data is ingested into the system.

“We're capturing all that data, the historical data, timelines, trends, and being able to then apply layers of accessibility and artificial intelligence onto that data,” Michael said.

Unlike the challenge of digesting a typical paper-based spreadsheet – within TilliT, data can be absorbed, and reports can be created via the easy-to-understand and intuitive user interface.

The result

Cultivating a connected frontline worker environment by digitalizing tasks for operators, Derby Rubber is seeing fewer mistakes being made on the shop floor due to operator error.

Through initially capturing and digitalizing the knowledge of their most experienced workers, TilliT acts as an operational co-pilot for both new and veteran operators to improve human efficiency.

Using TilliT, Derby Rubber is empowering operators, enhancing decision-making capabilities, and improving sustainability by digitalizing day-to-day workflow and removing paper from the shop floor.

“Our ongoing partnership is really helping Darby rubber kick goals to continuously innovate the business and to continuously deliver improved value for our customers.”

Michael Clayton, CEO of Derby Rubber.
